Vladimir Putin has been hit by a huge nightmare after a senior Russian military intelligence officer lost both his feet after he was caught up in a car bomb attack.
The horrific moment was caught on video by CCTV cameras on the building at Sinyavinskaya Street in Moscow, where his car was parked.
Video footage shows Andrei Torgashov approaching his Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, holding what appears to be a briefcase.
He opens the back door of his car, placing the briefcase inside, after which he moves to the front of the car at the driver’s side.
As he is about to get in, there is a huge explosion, sending flames and black smoke into the air.
Miraculously, Torgashov survived the apparent assassination attempt, presumably because the explosion did not set fire to the car.
The GRU officer managed to stop the bleeding by making tourniquets from his shirt before ambulances arrived at the scene.
He was rushed to hospital, where his feet were amputated, and continues to receive treatment for his severe injuries.
Later security officials released more footage from the CCTV cameras, which appear to show the perpetrator placing a bomb underneath the car.
At 2.28am, a young man in a light sweatshirt approaches the Toyota Land Cruiser and places explosives on the bottom, near the driver’s seat, before disappearing.
The would-be assassin appears to have fled to Turkey in a vain attempt to avoid capture.
Turkish police reportedly captured Yevgeny Serebryakov in an operation involving several plainclothes detectives in Bodrum.
Officers are seen approaching a white car with their guns drawn and pulling the suspect from the car before handcuffing him while he lies face down on the floor.
In a statement, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said: “The man suspected of blowing up the car of an officer from the military unit of ‘psychological operations’ of the GRU, was detained. The detainee is a citizen of the Russian Federation.”
A source from the Ministry said Serebryakov entered Turkey as a tourist and was not on Interpol databases.
