Moment Houthi drones blast Red Sea ship in horror blast | World | News
Video footage shows the dramatic moment a transport ship explodes in the Red Sea after being hit by drone boats.
The attack was carried out by Houthi rebels last week on the Greek-owned ship The Tutor.
Footage of the daring attack was posted to social media channels by the Iran-backed militia.
One sailor from the Philippines is said to have died and the ship has sunk, according to the latests reports.
Images show a drone boat hitting the Tutor at the stern where the command tower is situated.
A huge cloud of thick black smoke billows into the sky after the first impact.
Another drone then hits the stricken vessel roughly in the centre, producing a massive ball of flames.
The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations confirmed that the ship had since sunk.
“Military authorities report maritime debris and oil sighted in the last reported location,” they said. “The vessel is believed to have sunk.”
The US Navy and its allies have been patrolling the waters for months in an attempt to protect commercial shipping and deter attacks.
Both commercial and naval ships have come under almost daily attack from the Houthis.
The rebels have launched more than 60 attacks targeting specific vessels and fired off missiles and drones that have killed a total of four sailors.
They’ve also seized one vessel and sunk two since November, and have vowed to continue their attacks.
A US-led airstrike campaign has targeted the Houthis since January, with a series of strikes on May 30 killing at least 16 people and wounding 42 others.
The Houthis claim that their attacks target ships linked to Israel, the United States and Britain.
In a joint statement on Wednesday, the shipping industry said: “It is deplorable that innocent seafarers are being attacked while simply performing their jobs, vital jobs which keep the world warm, fed, and clothed.”
